Hey guys!! Its that time of the year again where we get to collaborate on something really awesome. Room 315 made me believe that if we set our minds on something, we can achieve it with rugged determination. I can’t wait to experience that with you all again. This time, we are going bigger. We are going to make 5 amazing documentaries.
First, I have been able to save 1 million naira to give to some lucky people and help them get on with making documentaries. Lets quickly spend it before Buhari strikes again o. here’s what we are going to do.
ASSEMBLE A TEAM
I am going to need 5 different teams from all over the country. The team will consist of three key members; The writer/researcher….The Director…and The Cinematographer. EACH TEAM MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE FEMALE MEMBER TO QUALIFY. Age is no criteria. When you assemble your key team of three, You will decide on a subject matter. You should also give your team a cool name. The three of you must agree on the subject matter and this takes us to the next stage…
CREATE A ONE-MINUTE VIDEO PITCH
Next, the three of you will create a one minute video pitch (you can use a phone) introducing each other and your respective roles on the project. you should also create the video around the location of the subject you wish to explore. if your documentary isn’t based on a location, show whatever best expresses the idea. I will share an example on my Instagram page tomorrow (@niyi_akinmolayan) so follow the IG handle. After making this video, tag me on Instagram so i can repost. also use the hashtag #docwithniyi. I’m interested in really cool ideas…be bold, be daring. Your documentary doesn’t necessarily have to be about hungry children in a forest…lol…It could be about a culture or lost tradition or even someone important. You guys have three weeks so get going. After all the submissions, i will chose 5 teams and then we…
INVITE THE FIVE TEAMS TO A THREE DAY BOOTCAMP IN LAGOS
After making my choices, largely based on importance of subject matter, clarity of video pitch and also number of likes on the repost, the five teams (15 people) will be invited to a boot camp in Lagos. In these three days, i will show us how I make documentaries, how to write proposals for documentaries, how to plan documentary budgets and how to film documentaries. I will try get professional filmmakers to teach us cool techniques as well. we will then break down the pitches of each team and advice them on how to go about it. At the end of the boot camp, EACH TEAM WILL BE GIVEN 200,000 NAIRA to go back to their respective states and make the documentary.
PRODUCTION AND POST PRODUCTION
Each team will go back with the 200k grant to make their own documentary but they will live stream every step of the way so i can guide and advice while they film. once they are done, All the documentaries will be brought to Anthill Studios where we will help the teams edit and do all post production on their documentaries. this will be on the house so the team doesn’t have to pay for post production. Each documentary should not be more than 20 minutes.
Here’s one of the fun part, when they are done, i will travel to each state where each team is from and premiere the documentary with them. We will also have a grand premiere here in Lagos possibly at FilmHouse Cinema and show all the five documentaries. the best documentary will win a grand prize (i no get money o but i will try to bully someone to bring that prize)
HOW CAN YOU BE OF HELP
A lot of people reached out and helped on room315. Its my policy never to ask for money on the blog and that still remains. However there are things you could help with; bootcamp space, food and other logistics, accommodation etc. If you are into professional documentaries and you would like to help train people for free during the bootcamp, do let me know. We have done this before and we can do it again.
Lets tell powerful stories. Lets go boldly where no one has gone before. Lets do it together.
